In the final Management Science lecture an industry talk was delivered by the management consulting firm Kearney. Dr. Thomas Fliedner, Principal at Kearney and former PhD student at the Chair of Operations Management, jointly with his colleagues Meltem Kandemir and Marinus Gottschau shared valuable insights on how Operations Research is applied in indurstry. Using the example of a value chain of a manufacturing company, Thomas discussed a mixed-integer linear program with the students, giving them a sense of the scale and the complexity optimization problems do have in industry. The talk concluded with a showcase of the implementation of the model and how modern optimization software is facilitating the modeling process.
