Airports are important location factors and major employers within their regions. The performance of airports largely depends on the effective and efficient execution of service processes.
Key planning challenges include passenger and cargo management, as well as the associated process organization and aircraft logistics. Operations Research methods can make a significant contribution to analyzing and improving efficiency. In addition, the coordination of various services is becoming increasingly important, as the different service providers at the airport often have diverging interests.
In this rapidly growing research field, the department is currently focusing on the analysis of the following issues:
- Efficient design of the inbound control of the baggage handling system
- Improvement of the outbound control of the baggage handling system
- Organization of push-back and towing processes for aircraft
- Logistics for persons with reduced mobility
- Impact of automated passenger baggage loading
