What is a project study?
Student teams work on a specific issue in a research or practical project. The objective of a project study is to apply practical knowledge acquired during their studies and to gain from "learning by doing" experience in project management.

Guidelines for how to write a thesis (Bachelor, Master and Project study) are available on the following page. You are required to use the following LaTeX template or Word template.

Admission requirements:
Admission for students of TUM-BWL. It is required that students have taken a minimum of 12 credits from the following courses before starting their project study, with the “Modeling, Optimization and Simulation in Operations Management” being mandatory:

  • Modeling, Optimization and Simulation in Operations Management (Kolisch/Grunow) - 6 Credits
  • Service Operations Management (Kolisch) - 6 Credits
  • Project Management (Kolisch) - 6 Credits
  • Basics of Advanced Planning and Supply Chain Management (Grunow) - 6 Credits
  • Controlling mit SAP (Friedl) - 6 Credits
  • Sales and Operations Planning in the Automotive Industry (Stäblein) - 6 Credits
  • Wertsteigerung von Industrie- und Dienstleistungsunternehmen (Krubasik) - 3 Credits
  • Cases in Lean Production (Grunow) - 6 Credits

Application:
If you are interested in doing a project study at our group, then please send an e-mail (in English) to scmlehre@wi.tum.de with the following information:

  • A completed application form
  • CV for each person
  • Transcript of grades (and a list of current courses) for each person

Please include the complete application documents in your request.  The selection of candidates is done by the Chair, and if necessary together with the company. 

Topics:
Students can contact the group with their own suggestions for topics. In addition, the following projects are open for application:

Scheduling in electroplating (minimum one German native speaker)

Scope:
3 months full time or 6 months during studies.

Project Team: 

  • Project group of 2 - 5 students (undergraduate level)
  • Mentor in the company (local support)
  • Supervisor at the university (academic support)
  • Steering committee (professor and representative of the practice partner)

Procedure: 

  • The project study begins with the preparation of a project plan and a kick-off with the research and / or practice partners. 
  • Students work at research and practice partner. Supervision is provided according to the needs of the students through the research and / or practice partner.
  • A submission of a written project report to the research and practice partner.
  • Students present their findings to the steering committee. 

Rating: 
12 ECTS Credits. The final score consists of the following: 

  • Intermediate presentation (individual assessment): 10%
  • Contribution to solution of practical problem (individual assessment): 30% 
  • Project report (evaluation of the entire project report, no individual assessment): 40% 
  • Final presentation (individual assessment): 20% 

  

Registration to the TUM School of Management administration:
Following an approval of the project study at the group, it needs to be accepted by the examinations office.
Registration is as follows:
1) Fill out the form (available here) with your information (Thema, Projektbeginn, Kooperationspartner, Mentor, Tutor; für alle Mitglieder des studentischen Teams: Name, Vorname, Matrikelnummer, Studiensemester).
2) Send the application form by e-mail to your supervisor review.
3) If your supervisor confirms the information, then you print out the form, sign it (NOTE: the signature of each team member is required) and send it to the secretary of our group (monika.wagner(at)tum.de). We will then forward the application to the examinations office.
