Frequently Asked Questions

I receive a huge amount of e-mails every day. While I do my best to respond to all of them, I appreciate if you first check the ten most frequently asked questions below that may save both of us some time and e-mails.

If you are a student at TUM, please check our Open Positions. We frequently announce student assistant positions there. If there is no open position, you can still send us an application on your own initiative to applications.bais@mgt.tum.de and I will check if you fit to one of our ongoing projects.
I do not accept external internship applications

Please check our Open Positions to see if we have a vacancy that matches your interest. If this is not the case, you can still send us an application on your own initiative to applications.bais@mgt.tum.de.

Your application should contain the following items: motivation letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of records, writing sample (ideally your master thesis or a part of it), reference letter.

I receive many PhD applications and try to respond to all of them. If you do not receive a reply within two weeks after reaching out, I apologize for the impoliteness but it will be very unlikely that you receive a positive response afterwards. I will not reply to incomplete applications.

Please contact me directly via schiffer@tum.de. Your application should contain: motivation letter, research statement (max. 1 page), curriculum vitae, two publications reflecting your research, two reference letters.
I will reach out to you shortly after receiving your application. I will not respond to incomplete applications.

Please check our Course information or the Campus system first. If this does not answer your question, please reach out to the research associate responsible for maintaining the respective course. If necessary, the associate will forward your request to me.

Please check our information for Bachelor Theses or Master Theses. If you follow these instructions, you can expect an answer from us within two weeks. After following the protocol there, we will reach out to you within two weeks (usually earlier). I do not respond to bachelor / master thesis requests sent to my personal e-mail address.

I only write recommendation letters for students that I know personally. If you attended one of my courses or wrote a Bachelor's or Master's thesis with us, please send your request to recommendations.bais@mgt.tum.de.

I do not respond to mass-emails on that topic. If you want my opinion on a research related topic, please reach out to me via schiffer@tum.de.

We frequently collaborate with industry on cutting edge research questions. Please reach out to me via schiffer@tum.de with specific information on: type of collaboration (individual consultation, short term research project, long term research project, joint PhD position), research question, budget, time horizon.

Please reach out to me via schiffer@tum.de with specific information on: topic of your start-up, a short explanation why you think that I can be of help, your expectation with respect to my commitment (one-time advice, advisory board member, …). I can only accept a subset of requests and hope that you are not disappointed in case I decline your request.
